Troubleshooting Microsoft Office Add-ins

By Atticus Sondergaard·Updated October 6, 2026·5 min read

Add-ins extend Office apps with extra toolbars, buttons, and task panes (CRM loggers, e-signature tools, meeting schedulers, security banners). When one stops appearing or stops working, the cause is almost always one of a short list of issues. Work through the checks below in order before opening a ticket.

First, identify which kind of add-in you have

The fix differs depending on the type, so confirm this before troubleshooting.

TypeHow to recognize itWhere it is managed
COM add-inInstalled by an MSI or EXE on the PC. Only works in desktop Office on that machine.File > Options > Add-ins in the Office app
Web add-in (Office Add-in)Appears in desktop Office, Outlook on the web, and the mobile apps. Usually opens a task pane that loads like a web page.Microsoft 365 admin center or the user's "Get Add-ins" store
Excel/Word template add-inAn .xlam, .xla, or .dotm file, often on a file share.File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: Excel Add-ins

Quick fixes that resolve most cases

  1. Fully restart the Office app. Close every window, then confirm the process is really gone. In Task Manager, end any lingering OUTLOOK.EXE, WINWORD.EXE, or EXCEL.EXE process before reopening.
  2. Restart the computer. Add-ins that register at install time often do not load until the next sign-in.
  3. Check for pending Office and Windows updates. Open File > Account > Update Options > Update Now, then restart the app.
  4. Confirm you are signed in. Under File > Account, your work account should be listed and not showing a "Sign in" or "Account needs attention" prompt. Web add-ins fail silently when the Office identity token is stale.
  5. Test connectivity. Web add-ins download their interface from the vendor's servers. If you are on a restricted guest Wi-Fi or a VPN that blocks outbound traffic, the task pane will stay blank or show an error.

The add-in is missing from the ribbon

Check whether Office disabled it

Office automatically disables add-ins that crash or start slowly. This is the single most common cause of an add-in vanishing overnight.

  1. Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. Look at the Inactive Application Add-ins and Disabled Application Add-ins lists at the bottom.
  3. If it appears under Disabled, set Manage to Disabled Items, click Go, select the add-in, and click Enable.
  4. If it appears under Inactive, set Manage to COM Add-ins, click Go, and select its checkbox.
  5. Restart the app.

Check for the slow add-in prompt

Outlook may show a notification offering to permanently disable an add-in that delays startup. If someone clicked "Disable this add-in," re-enable it from File > Slow and Disabled COM Add-ins and choose Always enable this add-in.

Check that the add-in is still assigned to you

Many web add-ins are deployed centrally and assigned to specific groups. If you changed roles or left a group, the add-in is removed from your ribbon within a few hours. Contact the service desk to confirm your assignment rather than trying to install it yourself from the store, which may be blocked by policy.

The add-in loads but does not work

  • Blank or white task pane: usually a content-blocking or certificate issue. Try the same add-in in Outlook on the web. If it works there, the problem is local to the PC.
  • "Sorry, we couldn't load the add-in" or a sign-in loop: clear the Office web cache. Close all Office apps and delete the contents of %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef, then reopen the app.
  • Buttons appear but do nothing: the add-in's backend service may be down or your license may have lapsed. Check the vendor's status page if you have one, and confirm with your manager that your license is current.
  • Works for some mailboxes but not others: if you open shared or delegated mailboxes, many add-ins only operate against the primary mailbox. This is expected behavior for most vendors.

Office is slow or crashing

To determine whether an add-in is responsible, start the app with add-ins turned off.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type the app name followed by /safe, for example outlook /safe or excel /safe, and press Enter.
  3. Work normally for a few minutes. If the problem disappears, an add-in is the likely cause.
  4. Close safe mode, reopen the app, and disable add-ins one at a time in File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins, restarting between each, until the culprit is identified.

Outlook also reports startup cost. Check File > Options > Add-ins for load times, or look for the "Add-in slowed down Outlook" notification. Anything consistently over a few seconds is worth reporting.

Reinstalling a web add-in

Only do this for add-ins you installed yourself. Centrally deployed add-ins cannot be removed by the user and will reappear.

  1. In Outlook, open Get Add-ins (also called All Apps or Add-ins, depending on the version).
  2. Go to My add-ins.
  3. Remove the add-in, close Outlook completely, then reopen and add it again.

What not to do

  • Do not download a replacement installer from a search result. Add-in installers are a common malware vector. Request the approved package from the service desk.
  • Do not edit registry keys under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office to force an add-in on. A load behavior forced past Office's resiliency checks usually causes repeat crashes.
  • Do not create a new Outlook profile as a first step. It is rarely the fix and costs you a full mailbox resync.

Information to include in a ticket

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, send the following so the technician does not have to ask:

  • The exact add-in name as it appears in the ribbon or the Add-ins list
  • Which app and whether you are using the installed desktop app, the web version, or mobile
  • Your Office version from File > Account > About (copy the full build string)
  • The exact error text, or a description of what you see instead (blank pane, missing button, spinner)
  • When it last worked, and anything that changed around then (new PC, password change, software install)
  • Whether the add-in works in Outlook on the web for the same account
  • Whether other people on your team see the same behavior

Submit the ticket through your usual ServerNova service desk channel. If the add-in blocks a time-sensitive task such as sending a contract for signature, say so in the request so it can be prioritized.
